Artist's Description
Photo of a steam tractor in Dorset, U.K. I took this in the late 80s while studying photography at college & originally printed it in the darkroom on bromide paper. The sepia toning was added digitally.
About Guy Pettingell
As both of my parents were talented artists I have always had a keen interest in visual art. I studied art & photography to a tertiary level, but didn't persevere any further as I found that earning actual money was more appealing! Having grown up in the U.K. I migrated to New Zealand at 21, continuing with drawing & photography as a hobby while doing various jobs in which I learned a number of different yet complimentary skills. While working as a self employed panelbeater & car painter I realised that if I could make complicated repair sections for cars I could also create steel sculptures, making all manner of things from dragons to roses. Continuing the industrial skill theme I began to experiment with automotive spray guns on...

I know what you mean, Guy. I attempted a class in photography at a community college but was overwhelmed by all the detail, when all I wanted was to be free to shoot at will. I am one of your photographers who uses digital to enhance some of my photography, yet I don't always alter my art. I've heard other artists curse the fact that anyone can now be an artist because of digital... You have great skill, so you can be both!
Guy Pettingell replied:
For me digital gives the photographer so many more options for editing, & also has made photography basically free. I enjoyed processing & developing my own photos, like the one above, but it's time consuming, expensive & quite limiting by comparison. A camera cannot compose or visualise the image for you, whatever the medium it is that vision which is the root of being an artist, not quibbling over equipment & technique.

This is wonderful, Guy. I also have a steam tractor in my photography. Lucky you studying photography -- I learn by the seat of my pants.
Guy Pettingell replied:
Thank you Sadie, it was enjoyable, but half of what I learned is now pretty much irrelevant thanks to digital photography.

Guy Pettingell replied:

Steve, I have a steam tractor also in my artwork under autos and machinery. Check it out. These vintage mechanical creatures are just wonderful. Good shot.
