Description
These are the larval stage of the Huhu beetle, native to New Zealand. They grow up to 60mm or so in length & eat wood, burrowing through timber using their pincer like mandibles & excreting what looks like sawdust. They can give you quite a nasty little nip!
In this larval form they are edible (no thank you) & reputedly taste like peanut butter.
